Magic had been used in underground rodeos where horses
are chased, roped and tripped for entertainment. In the process,
his hoof was severely lacerated by the ropes. This cruel practice
is done to show off the roping skills of the participants. However,
for the horses, tripping has nothing to do with skills and everything
to do with forced injury and senseless cruelty.

The horses used in these rodeos are at the end of the line of
usefulness. They are the unwanted, the untrained, the forgotten.
Those who supply horses for horse tripping often look for cast-off
Arabians at auctions. Arabians, with their regal look and fancy
gallop, add to the excitement of the tripping events. But Arabians
are also sensitive with fine bones and necks, leaving them vulnerable
to serious injuries. Because of the cruel nature of such events,
California has banned tripping. But there are still underground
rodeos in operation.
The best and most effective way to put an end to such events is
to put an end to our view of horses as disposable. This is why
Equus exists. We want to change how horses like Magic are treated.
We believe horse guardianship is a cradle to grave responsibility.
Not a passing fancy. This is why Magic, who was found at the stockyards
and rescued, and many like him now have a permanent home at Equus.
They are here to stay for the rest of their lives.
